Learning Approach: Reading

MidiEnglish places an emphasis on reading and the enjoyment of the English language. Thematic readers and storybooks are used in place of traditional textbooks, to enable students to gain skills in reading, listening, speaking and writing. pause These reading materials introduce thematic topics, storybooks with different genres and text types.

Learning Approach: Phonics

The lower levels include a foundational phonics program. Starting from learning the alphabet, students move on to identifying beginning sounds. Thereafter, short vowel word families, blends, digraphs and long vowels are introduced progressively to build the ability to decode and read more words, and prepare students for more advanced reading tasks.

Learning Approach: Music

Musical activities are built in to enhance understanding and memory of new knowledge acquired. Thematic songs and phonics jingles reinforce the learning of words and sounds, while activities incorporating musical instruments add a fun element to lessons.

Learning Approach: Speaking

To develop speaking skills in the lower levels, students engage with conversation songs to become familiar with common phrases and expressions for everyday language use. At the upper levels, the speaking component focuses on developing communication skills using rich vocabulary and complex sentences, participate in casual conversations, and deliver oral presentations.

Learning Approach: Grammar

Apart from exposing students to language use in a story context, students are also taught grammar in a structured and progressive manner at the upper levels. Students are given a systematic overview of grammar rules and how the rules relate to one another. The combination of these approaches makes learning grammar memorable, and helps students to develop confidence in constructing sentences.
